Stuff Out There In the World

Hey. I got to talk to super smart and all-around nice* writer-person Michael Noll of Read To Write Stories about my story "Walking Stick," descriptions in fiction, and writing the Cherokee language. You can read the interview here. He had some questions that really made me think about how I approach these things, which was helpful. I often resist defining things for myself because, well, it's hard, and I guess because I still harbor a little bit of that old time belief that to name something is to take away some of its power, its magic.

He also used "Walking Stick" to come up with a great description exercise. This is something he does  a couple of times a week over at Read To Write Stories, talk with writers about their work and then create exercises so other writers can practice the craft. It's useful if you're in any stage, really: students just starting out, cynical--or uh, seasoned--writers who may want to work on something that's challenging, or anyone in between. Check, check, check it out!

*He also mentioned me and Chekov in the same sentence**, which made me giggle a little and, of course, blush with delight.

**Okay. The same blog post, but still.
